Brendan, the fact that you can speak and write fluent chinese, gives you a huge advantage on whatever you do with the chinese culture, because language is such an important element to help you understand the culture(even the slang words), because I believe language reflexes the complexity of our society. That's why it took me 3 years to learn to speak English, and about 10 years to learn mandarin, the culture foundation in china is way more advanced and complicated than US, even Great Britain.
In the past, I have heard my friend mentioned the book PASSING THE TIME IN BALLYMENONE by Henry Glassie, and now you've mentioned it, I think I will find some time and read it. Besides politics, it would be really nice to learn something about the people and see where their ideologies came from through the eyes of folk culture...
Well, tomorrow will be St. Patrick's day, and here in Hollywood, we will have a parade joined by the world renowned rock band THE YOUNG DUBLINERS, along with the hot and sexy Laker Girls, it's gonna be very exciting. It only happens once a year, enjoy yourself no matter where you are.
RE: At the eve of St. Patrick's day, I'll send you my favorite Irish blessing: May you get all your wishes but one, so that you will always have something to strive for!

@Qiao Ciao Bambino: Oh dear -- should I say 'xiexie,' or "grazie,' or 'go raibh maith agat?' I do agree that there are similarities between Chinese and Irish folk tales, and I hope to do more to explore that in future. In the meantime, the scholar Henry Glassie has some great books that I strongly recomment -- really wonderful reproductions of both folktales and the ways that people tell them.

Brendan, look at you, you are such a hit in Beijing, good for you! About the "working stiffs," I think it should be called "a productive way to kill time," because I learn from my job everyday; in addition, these so called "working stiffs" make the largest part of our economy... anyways, no point to argue this. I'm a big fan of Irish culture, my step daddy is full Irish, I think that Ireland has many distinct similarities with the Chinese culture, like the folk tales, music, supertition, and people's sentimentality, etc.
Celtic music is more beautiful than any other culture's music.
